North America - Equipped Salt & Light Process™ Participant
Opportunities to share our faith often appear in ordinary conversations. Sometimes we recognize them immediately; other times, we notice them only after the moment has passed.
One equipped witness experienced this while shopping with her mother. As they waited in the checkout line, the cashier asked her mother about their family’s plans for the following day.
The equipped witness immediately recognized an opportunity for a Faith Flag. Her mother could mention that they planned to attend church that morning. Instead, she shared about their family lunch and activities with her grandchildren, without mentioning her faith.
A Faith Flag is a simple comment or observation that reveals something about our faith and creates an opportunity for another person to ask questions or continue the conversation.
Both women had completed Salt & Light Process™ Witness Training. After leaving the store, the daughter asked her mother whether she had considered mentioning church.
“Oh my, you’re right!” her mother responded. “It didn’t even cross my mind.”
Her mother felt guilty and wanted to return to the store. But her daughter reassured her that they did not need to dwell on the missed opportunity. She acknowledged that she could have spoken up, too.
Instead, they could turn the missed moment into prayer. The daughter suggested asking God to speak to the cashier through someone else that day and to help her mother become more aware of the opportunities He places before her.
Although they did not know what happened with the cashier afterward, the experience became a meaningful moment of learning and encouragement.
This story reminds us that becoming an intentional witness is a process of growing in awareness. When we miss an opportunity, we can respond with prayer, encourage one another, and ask God to help us recognize the next opening to make Jesus known.
Where might God be giving you an opportunity to raise a Faith Flag today?
