What If I Saw God Working in the Ordinary?
The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed… though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants.
Matthew 13:31-32 (NIV)
Living the Sermon on the Mount Through the Practical Wisdom of Jesus' Parables
I have a weakness for the dramatic. I want the burning bush, the parted sea, the moment where everything is obviously, unmistakably God. Instead, Jesus hands me a mustard seed. The quiet conversation. The hidden prayer. The small act of obedience nobody noticed — including me. These moments feel like nothing. God apparently has a very different opinion.
Kingdom growth is gloriously unimpressive in real time. It's slow, hidden, and stubbornly steady — which is almost everything I am not drawn to naturally. But something is happening beneath the surface, beyond my sight, beyond my ability to manufacture or hurry. And if the mustard seed is any indication, what's coming is going to be far larger than anything I could have dreamed up on my own.
What if…the small thing right in front of me today is exactly the size God prefers to work with?
Let's do this together.
Lord, I confess I chronically underestimate small things — including what You can do with them. Here is what little I have. Grow something I cannot yet imagine. I trust You with the seed — even when it doesn't look like much. Amen.
