The Ministry of Faultfinding

In literature classes during my college days, I was taught to analyze the works of great authors. At times, however, it seemed as if I was encouraged to search for and find fault with literary giants. As a non-literary giant, this was both humorous and frustrating to me. I later came to understand that what I called “faultfinding” was actually an exercise in discernment and analysis.

Faultfinding, however, is far too common in my life. Where does it come from? The tendency to find fault often arises out of my sense of inadequacy which yields a need to be right or superior. No matter the origin, it is wrong and destructive.

Discernment and insight, however, comes from God.

…if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:3-4
