Learning from Jesus' Questions - Why Worry?
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? Matthew 6:27-28 NIV
Jesus tells me not to worry, but this is easier said than done! As I focus on problems and difficulties in my life, my country, and the world, I quickly start to worry and turn to negative thinking. Worry at first seems like a comfort, but it is a cancer that eats at my soul.
What is the antidote to worry? If I go on the internet to WebMD I will find "9 Steps to End Chronic Worrying". I am told to first make a list of my worries and then second to analyze my worries, and on to 7 more steps. Jesus starts in a different place. He says to focus on Him and His Kingdom. Why? This births trust and diminishes worry.
But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34 NIV
Choosing the opposite of worry - trust in Jesus and hope in His Kingdom - sounds like a blessed space in which to live.
Oh Father, my heart and mind want to wander from you. Forgive me. You offer me peace that passes all understanding. I seek your Kingdom and your righteousness and leave worry at the door. Amen.
