Is Testing Good for My Faith?

The journey to becoming an emergency physician was long and arduous filled with many tests. The most challenging tests were during residency training where the integration of head knowledge met headlong with practical application; could I put into practice what I knew in my mind? The test? To see if I had the ability to take incomplete information and come to conclusions, and the courage to make hard decisions quickly. My residency was a time to practice, practice, practice under the watchful eye of wise mentors – attending physicians.

Could the same hold true for faith?  What does it mean to put into practice my knowledge about God and my faith in God?  In Deuteronomy it says,

The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul.  Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone.  Obey his commands, listen to his voice and cling to him. (Deuteronomy 13:3-4 NLT)

The practical application of my faith is expressed in the verbs found in these verses:

·       Serve

·       Fear

·       Obey

·       Listen

·       Cling

Will you join me this week in serving, fearing, obeying, listening and clinging?  God is testing our faith.

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
