Leading Like a Shepherd
Studying leadership over the years, I have read books by people like Stephen Covey, Peter Drucker, John Maxwell, and others. I learned such things as 7 habits, 5 principles and multiple guidelines which helped shape my thoughts about leadership. At a time of leadership crisis, however, I find these ideas difficult to implement. My memory fails me in the moment.
When I need simplicity in this area, I look to the concise description of King David’s leadership style,
And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them. (Psalm 78:72 NIV)
Two simple principles needed for leadership:
- Integrity of heart... Christ-like character
- Skillful hands... competence
There is also an attitude implied – that of a shepherd who carefully watches over his flock. A good shepherd loves his sheep. What better example of a good shepherd than Jesus.
Every leader follows someone or something. The question is, "Who or what are we following?" Fortunately, the Good Shepherd modeled exemplary leadership and offers us the opportunity as leaders to follow Him. Will you join me this week?
