Always Pursuing...What?
Although I do not care much for New Year's resolutions, January 1st found me thinking about my time, energy and resources, and what to pursue for the New Year. Should I invest in:
- Bettering myself physically? Certainly anyone who knows me would suggest some weight loss and continued exercise...not a bad choice.
- Bettering myself professionally? The many needs for personal growth in my work arena require constant attention.
What specific areas would benefit from my attention? They all would. But, if the Apostle Peter were here with me today, he would encourage me to pay attention to the one pursuit that would rise to the top and influence all the rest.
He encouraged the early Christians by asking them,
What kind of people ought you to be as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming? (2 Peter 3:11 NIV)
He realized that not all the pursuits in life have the same value. In fact, Peter says that much of what is pursued will be destroyed by fire on Judgment Day. (2 Peter 3:10-14 NIV) Therefore, he encourages me as well as them to,
Make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with him [God]. (2 Peter 3:14 NIV)
This is impossible for a feeble man like me. Fortunately, God knew that and gave me His Spirit to help me. Will you join me this year in pursuing Peter’s challenge to us - the greatest of all pursuits?
Sharing the journey with you,
