Meekness vs. Impertinence

Rarely do I hear people talk about the desire for meekness. Rarely do I hear a sermon on meekness. And rarely do I think about it. Yet Jesus tells me,

Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 NIV

Meekness sounds like a weak character trait to me. However, meekness is not docility or timidity. Rather it is humility and patience while under provocation from others—not one of my greatest strengths. I would more likely react by trying to prove myself right no matter what. How blind I am!

A dear friend and I were talking. Once more I was trying to prove myself right. I was disappointed because instead of agreeing with me he continued to ask me questions. Without judgment, he encouraged me toward meekness without even mentioning the word.
Meekness is power under control with gentleness and respect. How I long to display this strength in my life.  Will you join me in the pursuit of meekness?

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
