Murmuring

As I was driving, the radio talk show host was encouraging his listeners to call in words not commonly used. A word that came to my mind was “murmur”– a mumbled expression of discontent. Although I rarely hear this word spoken, I suppose that a murmuring attitude has not gone out of style.

In fact, I think my soul may be infected. Murmuring sees what is negative rather than the possibilities for good. When I’m murmuring I focus on unbelief rather than belief. A whining, grumpy mood overtakes me rather than a spirit of gracious gratitude.

This is not a trivial problem. In fact, the apostle Paul warns me that murmuring prevents me from being a light in the world,

Do all things without murmurings and disputings; That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14 - 15 KJV

Murmuring may be an old-fashioned word but it is not an old fashioned attitude. Please forgive me for the murmurings from my past and join me in moving to a spirit of gracious gratitude.

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
