Questions

He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes,

He who does not ask a question is a fool forever.

Chinese Proverb

One of my professors in medical school said that the best doctor was the one who asked better questions, resulting in better answers. Questions are important in life. Some say, "Whys are wise!"

Interestingly, Jesus loved and used questions. Over 180 times Jesus was asked a question and only three times did He directly answer that question. Often He responded by asking another question.

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.

"Teacher," he asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"

"What is written in the law?" He [Jesus] replied. "How do you read it?"

Luke 10:25-26 NLT

Jesus asked more than 300 questions that are recorded in the Gospels.

Ones like:

  • "If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that." Matthew 5:47 NLT
  • Jesus said, "Why did you doubt me?" Matthew 14:31 NLT

Might the questions of Jesus be life-transforming as I seek to answer them? Will you join me in considering Jesus' questions?

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
