What distracts me as I follow Jesus?
The story of Jesus’ visit to the home of Martha and Mary has often troubled me. Maybe that is because I identify with Martha. Being a type A, goal oriented person concerned with outcomes, impact and metrics, this story seems harsh on anyone trying to get the work done. Let’s face it; someone had to prepare the meal.
Yet Martha’s dinner preparations distracted her from time with Jesus.
But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. (Luke 10:40 NLT)
In the rapid pace of today’s world it is hard to stop and listen to Jesus. Yet it is Jesus who gives me permission to stop, just as he did to Martha when he said,
My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details. There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41-42 NLT)
Jesus desires my full attention with Him – undistracted – because He cares deeply about our relationship. Will you join me in sitting at Jesus’ feet with attentive ears?
Sharing the journey with you,
