Rest the Horses
One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 4:6 NIV)
My grandfather once advised me to “take time to rest the horses”. In his day, while plowing the fields, he had to do just that. His advice given to me in the 1970’s, was true in those days of tractors, cars and planes. Cell phones, email and Facebook had not even appeared on the scene — bringing a new level of frenetic activity.
How do I “rest my horses” in today’s world? Do I even recognize that rest is as important as the work I do. Am I able to sort out the necessary from the unnecessary in my busy world? Busyness and rest are choices I make.
God desires that I work diligently, but He also desires that I maintain that inner sanctuary filled with the tranquility, contentment and peace that only He can provide. Attending to that sacred inner sanctuary requires time with God and rest.
Join me this week in resting our horses!
