Laboring to Rest
I have often been evaluated for the quantity and quality of my work but I have never been evaluated for the quantity and quality of my rest. Rest does not come easily for me! My personality, occupation and culture all seem to work against seeking rest. More disturbing is my acceptance of a life without adequate rest—a rest that is not just relaxation or recreation but a state of tranquility only God can give... God's rest.
The writer of the book of Hebrews encourages me to strive for God's rest,
...for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest... (Hebrews 4:10-11 NIV)
Effort and sacrifice must be expended in order to experience the peace and joy God has intended for me in His rest. This is a process that requires intentionality.
There are consequences to ignoring relaxation and recreation but there is a devastating price to pay for ignoring God's rest. I want God's rest! Will you join me this week laboring to enter the rest only God can provide?
Oh, by the way, do you think rest should be a part of my annual evaluation?
Sharing the journey with you,
