No Rule Book, No Lines, No Joy

Imagine a game of tennis without the lines. Just throw the rule book out the window. The way I play tennis, the temptation to do just that is strong! However, without the lines, the game of tennis loses its meaning and subsequently its joy.

No rulebook, no lines, and no joy apply to all of life.

  • When the lines and rule book are removed from the practice of medicine, compassion and care for people are replaced by priority for profit and research without restraint.
  • When the lines and rule book are removed from commerce, we move from caring for community to personal greed.
  • When the lines and rule book are removed from government, we change from a society that cares for the common man and desires to restrain evil to a society positioning for power and "the vote."

When spiritual lines are blurred and the rule book removed from my daily life, I quickly lose meaning and joy as I stumble off the path. Even George Washington realized that he could not serve as the first president of the United States without the lines and the rule book when he said, "...it is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible."

King David agreed.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)

This week join me in attending to the book God has given us to guide our path, providing meaning and joy on the way.

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
