The Path to Selflessness

"Dad, this conversation is not about you!" These words lovingly whispered in my ear by my daughter caused me to stop in my tracks. I had been caught once again talking about myself and not listening to others. How easy to believe that "it's all about me". It is counterintuitive to imagine that joy and pleasure are best realized when my focus is entirely on the other person.

The path from selfishness to selflessness is a life-long discipline of thinking less about me! The Apostle Paul, encouraging a transforming renewal of my mind, says,

. . . Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought. . . (Romans 12:3 NIV)

To be honest, I think more highly of myself than I ought. My attitude, instead, should be that of Jesus,

. . . Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing . . . (Philippians 2:6-7 NIV)

In Jesus, I have the ultimate example of selflessness to follow. If you have the same propensity to selfishness as I do, join me this week in seeking a selfless life modeled after a Selfless Savior.

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
