Extraordinary in the Ordinary

I was a guest - not a member of the family, but treated like one. Examining the outside - the seen - this family is extraordinary. Musical, athletic, and academic talent seem to ooze from their household. As a guest, however, I had the privilege of observing the ordinary - their relationships and the process of everyday living. My observations? Laughter was shared liberally. Relationships were nurtured. Parenting was practiced. Faith was central. They were truly extraordinary in the ordinary!

In my own life, I sometimes neglect the ordinary in my quest for the extraordinary. I identify with the occasional impulsive nature of the Apostle Peter.

  •    His strong desire to walk on water (the extraordinary), compared with
  •    His discipline of following Jesus on dry land (the ordinary)

Being extraordinary in our relationship with God always reveals itself in daily living and loving. This is no easy task! The early church, guided by the Holy Spirit, exhibited this precious quality of living ordinary lives in extraordinary ways.

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer". (Acts 2:42 NIV)

They treated as sacramental the daily tasks of life.

What will this week bring in our daily living? Will you join me in the challenge of treating, as sacramental, the daily tasks of each day?

Sharing the journey with you,

Bob Snyder
