Information Overload
"That is certainly Google's goal - to make easily available all the world's knowledge in every language." The World is Flat, Thomas L. Friedman
Obtaining needed scientific medical information in years past required much time in the library searching medical journals. When time did not permit, I would send an assistant to do this time-consuming but important work. Now, one click of my computer gives me more medical information than I need or can process.
Yet this easy access to an astronomical amount of information makes me feel uneasy. I ask myself
- Could this information be totally correct?
- How do I evaluate the source of the information?
- Does this increased information load benefit my communication with and relationship to my patients, family and friends?
In some respects, knowledge in today's world has become "cheap". Yet knowledge, when considered in the realm of God's word, is rich and deep.
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, KNOWLEDGE; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love." (2 Peter 1:5-7 NIV)
When placed in the midst of the words above, knowledge takes its place on higher ground. The richness of knowledge intertwined with faith, goodness, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness and love can not be googled.
Sharing the journey with you,
