Don't despise small things!
My friend, Michael Cardy, has encouraged my interest in nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is molecular manufacturing; that is, building things using one atom or molecule at a time. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter (3 or 4 atoms wide). We are talking SMALL! The future uses for this technology in the fields of medicine and other disciplines hold much promise. What previously was impossible to see or contemplate because of size limitation will soon be a reality.
Consider "small". Is this not a picture of the dramatic event of that first Christmas? The answer to the need of mankind was provided by an omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient eternal God who invaded time and space. God reduced himself on our behalf and became man. He became SMALL!
My grandfather once asked me, "How far do you think God reduced Himself to enter our world? Did He go as far as to become DNA?" Just how small did the God of the universe become?
This Christmas, let us not despise small things. Instead, let us consider becoming "unknown" and gently squeezing into the small places within the lives of those around us who have great need to know this babe from Bethlehem, Jesus Christ.
"The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14 NIV)
